Singaporean nu-gaze quartet unveil the first chapter of a cinematic debut, exploring topics close to the heart.
On 18 September 2026, Singapore-based nu-gaze quartet Awful Things will release “Indigo,” the first single from their forthcoming debut EP of the same name and the opening chapter in a three part narrative that unfolds across music and visual art.
For Awful Things, every release is designed as part of a larger experience. Each song, music video and artwork contributes to an interconnected world where sound and imagery become different ways of telling the same story. With three singles up for release over the coming months, the boys have much some surprises set along the way. Rather than existing as standalone releases, “Indigo,” “First Light” and “Lost Peaks” will form a continuous emotional journey leading into the band’s debut, 5 track EP.
At its core Indigo explores mental wellbeing not as a clinical subject, but as a deeply human experience. The songs navigate grief, anxiety, trauma, healing and the quiet moments of hope that emerge after darkness. Instead of offering answers, the band invites listeners to sit with uncomfortable emotions and discover their own meaning within them.
Musically, Awful Things combine expansive shoegaze textures, crushing alternative rock and cinematic songwriting to create music that feels as visual as it is emotional. Inspired by artists such as Slowdive, Thornhill, Thrice and From Indian Lakes, the band’s sound moves between fragile beauty and overwhelming catharsis.
Produced with Australian musician Callan Orr (Dream On, Dreamer) and released through Indonesia’s Polarity Records, Indigo represents the beginning of the band’s creative vision. The accompanying music video, directed by Singaporean creatives Lepsy Bahru, expands the narrative beyond the music,
creating a visual language that will continue throughout the EP rollout.

Awful Things existsbecause we wanted to write the music we’d always wanted tohear: honest songs that stay with you long after they’re over. Ifsomeone finds a part of themselves in these songs, then they’vealready done more than we ever expected.”
For the band, partnering with Polarity Records represents anopportunity to contribute to a growing network of independentalternative artists across Southeast Asia. Built throughcollaboration rather than borders, the Awful Things projectreflects the belief that some of the region’s most exciting musicis being created by communities working together acrosscountries.
